War has a very negative effect on people. Den's life was changed by the war in Vietnam. "Changed By War" is his personal story of the battles in combat and back at home. If you have loved one who has been exposed to war, this might be a good book to help you understand them.

Changed By War eBook Den Slattery

"Changed By War" is Mr. Slattery's story of his two tours in Vietnam. He spent one tour with the Marine Corps as an infantryman and later another with the Army as the war was ending. His descriptions of his time in Vietnam are quite good and he captures the feel of what it was like very well. It was also interesting to hear his experiences and some of his activities after the Marine Corps.

This book is much more than that, though. It is also the story of how Mr. Slattery really was transformed by war. It chronicles his journey to becoming the person he is today. This book has a strong religious overtone. If that turns you off, I would not recommend this book. Personally, I found his story quite interesting and appreciate him sharing it. It is worth reading.

Changed By War eBook Den Slattery Reviews

This was a startling real read about the tragedy of our involvement in the so-called Vietnam War, an American disaster, and how it influenced these fine young American men. History continues to reveal why we should not have done what we did. What a tragedy for the USA. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good war story...this is an eye-opener and very well written.
Very disappointed and sorry I paid for this book as it uses his story to preach and try to convert others to his way of thinking. The sad thing is he can't even speak from his own heart but has to parrot the words from the Bible and others. Regarding his experience in Vietnam...lots of detail missing. Question how much action he ever saw.
The book's alright, it's just too lacking in the kind of detail that other books about Viet Nam offer. And the ending is a bit of a negative surprise. Did you need to sell books so that we all know about your religious experience?
For years I have tried to understand the changes in my husb and. when he returned from Viet Nam in 1970. High school sweethearts we married 2weeks before he left. Little did I know he would return a stranger. Through the years he refused to talk only recently has he opened up a little to me not the kids or anyone else. He expresses shame in what he did over there. It fills my heart with thankfulness when someone shakes his hand and thanks him. But,can't help but feral saddened that it took so long.Thank you for giving me a glance into understanding the true toll his service took on him
I felt the book was a very open and honest look at the authors Vietnam War experiences but also even more about the personal struggles that all face in life, meaning of life, and spiritual needs, etc. I have no regrets in reading the book and the first two thirds of the book went fairly fast. I don't think it is the best book on personal reflections on war experiences and readjustments that I have read, but it is not the worst either, about in the middle. I did think it was a very honest and sincere narrative, so if you have the time give it a shot.
He enlisted in the Marines during Vietnam, and became a rifleman who was sent to Vietnam for one tour of combat. After his return to the states, and getting out of the Corps, he tried civilian life, but was restless. He then enlisted in the Army, and was trained in electronics, and was sent back to Vietnam for a second tour. THis tour was in the rear bases. In the process of what happened to him in his life, he found God, and became a minister, and an Army Chaplain. The tours in Vietnam sound like the writings of others who were there. His finding God during his service and writing about it is uncommon. A positive book about a man's life that turned out well.
Although I am a Cradle Catholic, I still relate to Rev. Slattery's book that seems to be about how we all were changed by serving in Vietnam. It may sound trite, but it is a validation of the truism that there is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole. I will say that there was more than one time that I begged God to spare my life. I can truly say that I have forgotten that God doesn't need to bargain with me, but that didn't stop me from promising to do things that I had no chance of keeping. Somehow He saw fit to ignore my silly promises and put me on that Freedom Bird back to people who love me unconditionally. For that reason alone, I recommend this book.
